Local Currency

The official currency of Tanzania is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS). While U.S. dollars are commonly accepted in tourist spots, it's recommended to carry some local currency for smaller purchases or when visiting rural areas. ATMs can be found in larger cities like Dar es Salaam, Arusha, and Zanzibar, but they may be scarce in more remote locations.

Credit cards are widely accepted in most hotels, restaurants, and safari lodges, though it's always a good idea to confirm in advance, as some places may only accept cash. Be aware that credit card transactions could incur additional fees, so having cash on hand for minor purchases is a smart move. Also, notify your bank about your travel plans to prevent any issues with card usage overseas.

Tipping is a common practice in Tanzania, particularly in the tourism sector. It’s typical to leave a tip of 10-15% in restaurants, and you may also want to reward guides, drivers, and porters after a safari or hike as a token of appreciation for their services.
