Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by our tour representative just outside the arrivals section. Following a brief introduction, your unforgettable safari adventure begins.
Start with a guided Kigali City Tour (included), exploring the city’s rich history, which spans over a century. Established as a German settlement in 1907, Kigali became Rwanda’s capital in 1962, replacing Butare during the country’s transition to independence.
Visit old Kigali, craft centers, and the Genocide Memorial Site to delve into Rwanda's story, from its pre-colonial era through the 1994 genocide, and learn about global genocides and the nation’s remarkable journey of recovery and resilience. Witness the harmonious blend of history and progress as you explore Kigali’s modern developments.
Enjoy lunch in Kigali before embarking on a scenic drive to Ruhengeri, the gateway to gorilla trekking in Parc National des Volcans. Located approximately 2.5 hours from Kigali and just 25 km from the Ugandan border, Ruhengeri is a charming town of 70,000 residents, known for its warm hospitality and stunning views of the surrounding volcanoes. Once a Belgian colony, the town now boasts a blend of French and English-speaking communities, enhancing its cultural appeal.

Breakfast at the lodge. 0700 hrs: Registration is a simple process where the park staff determines which group of gorillas you will visit. The park staff discusses your fitness level and advises you of the trekking times and conditions to the various groups based upon their location in the park the previous evening. There are a total of 96 gorillapermits available each day with a maximum of eight trekkers visiting any one group.
Once trekking groups are assigned, the Lead Guide will provide a comprehensive briefing on trekking procedures, safety protocols, and respectful conduct during your encounter with the gorillas. Following the briefing, you will drive to the designated starting point on the mountain.
The trek, which can last anywhere from two to six or more hours depending on the gorillas' movements, offers ample opportunities to rest and capture stunning photographs along the journey as guided by experienced rangers.
After this unforgettable experience, return to your lodge for a well-deserved lunch. Spend your afternoon at leisure or choose to enhance your adventure with optional activities, such as visiting the serene Twin Lakes of Ruhondo and Burera or immersing yourself in Rwanda’s vibrant culture and heritage at the Iby’iwacu Cultural Village (optional; additional cost).
