Rising majestically within Arusha National Park, Mount Meru is Tanzania’s second-highest peak and Africa’s fifth tallest. Often chosen as a preparatory climb for Kilimanjaro, Meru offers a more technically demanding ascent, rewarding trekkers with a uniquely challenging and fulfilling adventure. Over the course of a three-day trek, climbers have the rare chance to encounter diverse wildlife, including giraffes, buffalos, antelopes, and baboons, enriching the experience with unforgettable sightings. For added safety and guidance, a professional park ranger accompanies you throughout the journey.
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by one of our friendly and experienced driver guides. After a short introduction, you will be escorted to Arusha for your overnight stay at your reserved hotel or lodge. Along the way, the guide will introduce you to this peaceful country and its tourism city. You’ll stay at the Gold Crest Hotel Arusha, known for its comfortable beds, beautiful garden, and attentive staff. If time permits, enjoy a complimentary short city tour with your guide.

Depart from Arusha and head to Ngongongare Gate for registration and permits. Begin your trek through the lush fig tree forest to Miriakamba Hut. The journey takes approximately 5 hours, with a scenic picnic lunch along the way. Pause to enjoy the breathtaking Moiyo waterfall before reaching Miriakamba Hut (2,514m/8,248ft). You’ll have dinner and spend the night here after covering around 14km (8.6 miles).

After breakfast, set out on a 4-hour trek to Saddle Point. Upon arrival, enjoy lunch and rest for about 2 hours. Later, take an optional side trek to Little Meru (3,820m/12,533 ft) for acclimatization. Return to Saddle Hut (3,566m/11,712 ft) for dinner and overnight stay. The total distance covered for the day is 7 km (4.3 miles).

Begin your summit attempt around midnight with tea and cookies to energize you. The climb starts at 12:00 AM, heading toward Rhino Point (3,800m/12,467 ft). The ascent is challenging, involving rocky terrain as you make your way to Meru Peak (4,562m/15,967 ft). The summit covers a distance of 8 km (5 miles).
After reaching the peak, descend back to Saddle Hut, where you’ll enjoy a hearty brunch. Later, continue descending to Mommella Headquarters via Jiwe la Lami, covering a total of 28 km (17 miles). From there, your driver will transfer you to your booked accommodation in Arusha.
