Discover Tarangire National Park

Tarangire National Park, located in northern Tanzania, is a celebrated wildlife sanctuary renowned for its abundant wildlife, striking landscapes, and iconic elephant herds. This hidden gem offers a unique safari experience, blending natural beauty with rich biodiversity.

Location

Nestled in the Manyara Region, Tarangire National Park spans approximately 2,850 square kilometers (1,100 square miles). It lies about 118 kilometers (73 miles) southwest of Arusha, making it easily accessible from one of Tanzania's primary safari hubs.

Landscape

The park's diverse terrain includes open grasslands, floodplains, riverine forests, and acacia-dotted woodlands. At its heart is the Tarangire River, a year-round water source that draws countless animals, particularly during the dry season.

Wildlife

Famed for its exceptional wildlife, Tarangire boasts one of Tanzania's largest elephant populations. Visitors can also encounter lions, leopards, cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, buffaloes, and a variety of antelope species. With over 550 recorded bird species, the park is a paradise for birdwatchers.

Elephant Migration

One of the park's most spectacular events is the annual elephant migration, which occurs during the dry season (June to October). Thousands of elephants converge on the park, creating an awe-inspiring display of nature’s majesty.

Baobab Trees

Scattered throughout the park are ancient baobab trees, often referred to as the "upside-down trees" due to their unique appearance. These towering giants, some hundreds of years old, not only enhance the park's scenery but also provide vital shelter and shade for wildlife.

Visitor Activities

Tarangire offers a range of activities, including thrilling game drives, guided nature walks, and birdwatching excursions. Its quieter atmosphere compared to other parks makes it ideal for those seeking a more intimate safari experience.

Accessibility

The park is conveniently accessible by road from Arusha, a popular starting point for northern Tanzania safaris. For air travel, the nearby Kuro Airstrip provides quick access, located about 30 minutes from the park’s entrance.

Whether you're captivated by majestic elephants, enchanted by ancient baobabs, or eager to explore a birdwatcher’s haven, Tarangire National Park promises an unforgettable adventure in the heart of Tanzania.
